Modeling and Performance Assessment of the Split-Pi Used as a Storage Converter in All the Possible DC Microgrid Scenarios. Part II: Simulation and E…
2021
Bidirectional DC/DC converters such as the Split-pi can be used to integrate an energy storage system (ESS) into a DC microgrid providing manifold benefits. However, this integration deserves careful design because the ESS converter must behave like a stiff voltage generator, a non-stiff voltage generator, or a current generator depending on the microgrid configuration. Part I of this work presented a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the Split-pi used as an ESS converter in all the possible DC microgrid scenarios. Five typical microgrid scenarios were identified. Each of them required a specific state-space model of the Split-pi and a suitable control scheme. The present paper complete…
Online optimization of a multi-conversion-level DC home microgrid for system efficiency enhancement
2017
In this paper, an on-line management system for the optimal efficiency operation of a multi-bus DC home distribution system is proposed. The operation of the system is discussed with reference to a distribution system with two conversion stages and three voltage levels. In each of the conversion stages, three paralleled DC/DC converters are implemented. A Genetic Algorithm performs the on-line optimization of the DC network’s global efficiency, generating the optimal current sharing ratios of the concurrent power converters. The overall DC/DC conversion system including the optimization section is modelled using MATLAB/Simulink. Thanks to the implemented online algorithm, considering …
Nonlinear droop control for minimum power losses operation in islanded microgrids
2017
In this work, a modified primary regulation technique is proposed to control one of the inverter interfaced units feeding an islanded microgrid. The proposed approach employs an off-line minimum losses Optimal Power Flow, OPF, to extract a lookup table for the composition of the droop curve. Simulations prove that generators reach an operating point that corresponds to a minimum loss operation for the relevant power flow distribution. Since OPF has been implemented with frequency and voltage dependent models, the results of the modified droop are stable and also energy efficient. Further studies will address further analysis on systems showing different R/X ratio and modeling of more genera…
Driven Primary Regulation for Minimum Power Losses Operation in Islanded Microgrids
2018
The paper proposes an improved primary regulation method for inverter-interfaced generating units in islanded microgrids. The considered approach employs an off-line minimum losses optimal power flow (OPF) to devise the primary frequency regulation curve’s set-points while satisfying the power balance, frequency and current constraints. In this way, generators will reach an optimized operating point corresponding to a given and unique power flow distribution presenting the minimum power losses. The proposed approach can be particularly interesting for diesel-based islanded microgrids that face, constantly, the issue of reducing their dependency from fossil fuels and of enhancing their gener…

2021
The integration of an electrical storage system (ESS) into a DC microgrid using a bidirectional DC/DC converter provides substantial benefits but requires careful design. Among such converter topologies, the Split-pi converter presents several merits at the cost of non-isolated operation. However, the few works in the literature on the Split-pi presented only closed-loop control with a single control loop; furthermore, they neglected the reactive components’ parasitic resistances and did not perform any experimental validation. This work aimed at investigating the use of the Split-pi converter as a power interface between an ESS and a DC microgrid. Five typical microgrid scenarios are prese…
INVERTER-BASED DISTRIBUTED GENERATORS, MODELING AND CONTROL
In the last few years, electrical power generation is moving from a centralized generation towards distributed generation including on-site Renewable Energy Sources (RESs). In order to overcome RES related issues, as intermittent and fluctuating power, storage elements are included in the on-site generation system. The interaction between distributed generator (DG) units including RES, storage and front-end power converters should be carefully modeled in order to analyze the power system stability. An accurate modeling of DGs is required. In this thesis, a new modeling approach has been proposed for the inverter-based DGs based on the concept of electrostatic synchronous machines. Detailed …
REGULATION DROOP COEFFICIENTS IN ISLANDED MICROGRIDS
In this thesis, a novel non-linear droop control is proposed. The droop curve is generated as a piecewise linear curve from the optimized operating points of the system under consideration for different values of the supplied load. For each Optimal Power Flow (OPF), the droop coefficients are generated and these create small piecewise linear parts of the final droop curve. The operation is constrained by frequency and voltage limits. It is well known that the load flow problem solution can provide infinite operating points if the generators set point is not fixed. For each loading condition, the solution to the OPF problem outputs a single solution. Such solution, in case of microgrids with…
Modeling and Experimental Validation of a Voltage-Controlled Split-Pi Converter Interfacing a High-Voltage ESS with a DC Microgrid
2023
The Split-pi converter can suitably interface an energy storage system (ESS) with a DC microgrid when galvanic isolation is not needed. Usually, the ESS voltage is lower than the grid-side voltage. However, limitations in terms of the ESS current make the use of a high-voltage ESS unavoidable when high power levels are required. In such cases, the ESS voltage can be higher than the microgrid voltage, especially with low microgrid voltages such as 48 V. Despite its bidirectionality and symmetry, the Split-pi exhibits a completely different dynamic behavior if its input and output ports are exchanged. Thus, the present work aims to model the Split-pi converter operating with an ESS voltage hi…
Voltage-Based Droop Control of Electric Vehicles in Distribution Grids under Different Charging Power Levels
2021
If left uncontrolled, electric vehicle charging poses severe challenges to distribution grid operation. Resulting issues are expected to be mitigated by charging control. In particular, voltage-based charging control, by relying only on the local measurements of voltage at the point of connection, provides an autonomous communication-free solution. The controller, attached to the charging equipment, compares the measured voltage to a reference voltage and adapts the charging power using a droop control characteristic. We present a systematic study of the voltage-based droop control method for electric vehicles to establish the usability of the method for all the currently available resident…
Real-Time Minimization Power Losses by Driven Primary Regulation in Islanded Microgrids
2020
Islanded microgrids are small networks that work independently from the main grid. The frequency and voltage in islanded microgrids are affected directly by the output power of distributed generators and power demand variations. In this work, a real-time driven primary regulation, which relies on optimized P-f droop coefficients, is proposed. In all operating conditions, it minimizes the power losses for islanded microgrids. The proposed configuration will allow the optimization modules to interact with each other and adjust parameters producing a suitable power sharing among generators. The methodology is tested based on a hardware-in-the-loop experimental set-up where distributed generato…
